Working on Wellness: Mental Health Awareness Month

Week 2: Know the Signs — Spotting Mental Health Challenges Early

Mental health struggles don’t always look the way we expect. Sometimes, the earliest signs are subtle — changes in mood, energy, focus, or sleep. Learning to recognize these signs in yourself and others is a powerful step toward creating a workplace where support and compassion come naturally.

Some early signs of mental health challenges include:

  • Feeling unusually sad, irritable, or anxious

  • Withdrawing from social or work activities

  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions

  • Changes in eating or sleeping habits

  • Feeling overwhelmed, hopeless, or unusually tired

You don’t need to have a diagnosis to take your mental health seriously. If something feels “off,” it’s worth paying attention — and it’s okay to ask for support.

What you can do:

  • Check in with yourself regularly — How am I really doing?

  • Reach out to a coworker who seems off — a simple “How are you?” can make a big difference

  • Familiarize yourself with mental health resources your workplace or community offers

Mental health challenges are common — and treatable. The sooner we recognize them, the sooner we can take action.
