Decorative Lighting in the Downtown Connector Project
The City of Shelton recently completed a major project in downtown Shelton and it looks great! The project area includes Olympic Highway North from the Library to C Street; Alder Street; and the City’s first roundabout at Alder & First Street near Mickey’s Deli. PUD 3 was a project participant in several ways.
We supported the City by helping them select decorative poles that match N 13th Street and Railroad Ave. The City purchased these poles through funding provided by the Transportation Improvement Board (TIB). The City selected the pole and lighting box locations. They own the poles, conduit, and lighting junction boxes for the lighting system. We will be available to help when/if the poles need to be replaced, but this work would be billable to the City.
On these new poles, we installed matching decorative arms, our LED street and area lights, and a GFI outlet for unmetered holiday lighting. These items are billed through PUD 3’s existing outdoor lighting rate schedule.
Because this project was put together a little differently than others, our commissioners entered into an interlocal agreement with the City’s leadership to clearly define each entity’s roles and responsibilities. You can read the interlocal agreement here.
The City purchased the poles on their own, so they don’t have a decorative pole daily rate associated with these like they do on Railroad and N 13th St. Since they own the poles, there is also no decorative banner or flower basket attachment rate for these poles.
Additionally, we undergrounded three-phase and fiber crossings on Alder at 5th Street and 7th Street in trenches provided by the City. We were also able to accommodate a request by the City for non-wood decorative guy stubs thanks to clever work by Sam Pettis!
Operations did an excellent job coordinating with the City’s contractor over the construction period.
