Safety Tip Tuesday - National Preparedness Month - Week 3
Week 3 - Protect Family and Property - Be Informed
A critical step to being prepared is taking the time to be informed and know how to access your community resources. Public safety officials use timely and reliable systems to alert you and your family in the event of natural or man-made disasters. Research the different warning alerts you can receive and the types of devices that receive alerts and ready.gov/alerts.
Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs)
These are short emergency messages from authorized federal, state, local, tribal and territorial public alerting authorities that can be broadcast from cell towers to any WEA-enabled mobile device in a locally targeted area.
These look like text messages to get your attention with unique sound and vibrations repeated twice
An example is an AMBER ALERT
You are not charged for receiving WEA's
Emergency Alert System (EAS)
This is a national public warning system that allows the president to address the nation within 10 minutes during a national emergency. State and local authorities may also use the system to deliver important emergency information.
The EAS is sent through broadcasters, satellite digital audio services, direct broadcast satellite providers, cable television and wireless cable systems.
FEMA and FCC are responsible for national-level tests and exercises.
NOAA Weather Radio (NWR)
This is a nationwide network of radio stations that broadcast continuous weather information from the nearest National Weather Service office based on your physical location.
Add a NOAA weather radio to your emergency kit.
FEMA Mobile App
The FEMA App allows you to receive real-time weather and emergency alerts, send notifications to lvoed ones, locate emergency shelters in your area, get preparedness strategies, and more.
