Safety Tip Tuesday - National Preparedness Month - Week 4

Week 4 - Teach Youth to Prepare for Disasters

Children are the future and an important part of building a national culture of preparedness. Teach your kids how to #BeReady. You can find fun activiites and safety tips at ready.gov/kids. It’s time to make a plan and have conversations about preparedness. This will help them know how to stay safe and navigate potentially scary situations.

Play games to learn about disasters.

  • There are several interactive games for kids available at Games | Ready.gov

  • A free youth preparedness program was created by the American Red Cross, including an activity book

    • This is designed to teach young children and their families how to stay safe during disasters and emergencies through fun activities such as crosswords, coloring pages, matching games and more!

    • Here is a downloadable copy of Prepare with Pedro

Talk it through

It is important for children to know who to call and where to meet if a disaster happens. Use this page to write down all of your family contact information and keep a copy with you.

  • Pick the same person for each family member to contact

  • Text, don’t talk. In an emergency, phone lines may be tied up. Texting may be easier and this leaves phone lines open for emergency workers.

  • Decide on a safe familiar, accessible place where your family can go for protection or to reunite.

    • If you have pets, choose a animal-friendly location.

    • Consider places in your house, neighborhood, and outside of your city or town.

  • Discuss ways to stay comfortable, clean, fed, and healthy. This could be for something as discussing how to eat during a power outage.

  • Practice, practice, practice!

Build a Kit Together

Sit down with your family and use this kid’s checklist to decide what else you need to make sure you and your family are prepared for any emergency.
