Lunch & Learn - Dams, Orcas, Salmon, and More! CANCELLED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

Learn about the recent threats to the dams - TUESDAY MARCH 31!

Have you been hearing about the Orca crisis in the Puget Sound? How about the shortage of salmon returning to the Columbia River? Have you heard the cries to breach the dams? Maybe you’ve heard concerns about “resource adequacy” and future blackouts or brownouts? Do you want to hear the answers to these questions and understand how these issues impact the Bonneville Power Administration, the Pacific Northwest region, and PUD 3 customers?

Come to this month’s lunch and learn and learn about the Columbia River System which is responsible for nearly 80% of the PUD’s electricity and how that system is at risk. Hear Joel Myer talk about the real threats to fish and wildlife and how BPA addresses those concerns.

The dams are operated and maintained by either the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers of the Bureau of Reclamation. The Bonneville Power Administration sells us the power and manages high voltage transmission lines that bring it to our substations.

The federal agencies are required to write a user’s manual for managing the river over the next 25 years for hydropower, fish and wildlife, cultural value, irrigation, barge and ship navigation, flood control, and recreation.

The recent release of the draft plan has created headlines throughout the Pacific Northwest. Although the news media has focused on four federal hydropower dams on the Snake River, the story is much deeper than that. As expected, the preferred plan has created tension between many users.

Joel will walk us through the history of hydropower in the Columbia River Basin, and how the new management proposal will affect the Pacific Northwest for years to come.

In the Johns Prairie Lunchroom on Tuesday, March 31 from 12:00-1:00.

Please RSVP on or before March 25.
